"'Praise' - How Befitting!"
Psalm 33

Wednesday AM Bible Study
June 16, 2004

No one has greater cause to praise God than those whom He has redeemed. They have been taken by Him from a state of being dead in trespasses and sins, and have been raised up to new life - even to the point of being seated in the heavenly places with Christ (Eph. 2:1-7). They are the ones who have been justified in His sight - made "righteous" by faith.

Here's a call to the righteous man or woman to praise this redeeming God. Verse 12 is a key affirmation in this psalm. Note how fitting such praise is among those whom God saves: ". . . for praise from the upright is beautiful" (v. 1); that is, "praise befits the upright" (English Standard Version). Praise is "comely" because it's the appropriate response to come from those whom God saves (1 Peter 2:9).

Let's walk through this psalm together; and as we do, may we who are in Christ be moved to do that which is most befitting to us - to praise the One who loves us so!

I. THE CALL: TO PRAISE THE LORD (vv. 1-3).
A. Praise Him in righteousness (v. 1).

B. Praise Him with music (v. 2).

C. Praise Him creatively (v. 3).

D. Praise Him skillfully (v. 3).

E. Praise Him boldly (v. 3).

II. THE CAUSE: BECAUSE OF WHO HE IS (vv. 4-5).

A. He is the One whose word is right (v. 4).

B. He is the One whose work is done in truth (v. 4).

C. He is the One who loves righteousness and justice (v. 5).

D. He is the One who fills the earth with His goodness (v. 5).

III. THE CONFIRMATION: THE EVIDENCE OF HIS PRAISEWORTHINESS (vv. 6-19).

A. As displayed in creation (vv. 6-9).

B. As displayed in human history (vv. 10-12).

C. As displayed in individual experience (vv. 13-19).

IV. THE COMFORT: THE RIGHTEOUS CAN TRUST IN SUCH A GOD (vv. 20-22).

A. Their soul waits on Him (v. 20).

B. Their heart shall rejoice in Him (v. 21).

C. Their hope will be fulfilled by Him (v. 22).
